The Bicycling Empowerment Network aims to promote sustainable social and economic empowerment through the use of bicycles. This includes supplying donated and affordable bicycles to disadvantaged communities and institutions. These bikes are distributed via various projects and through Bicycling Empowerment Centres (BECs), entrepreneur-based businesses that BEN helps to set up in their target communities.
BEN has partnered with the Pedal Power Association (PPA) to create the Bike4All programme, which aims to make bicycles affordably and safely available to more people. Bicycles are cheep, reliable modes of transport that also help to relieve traffic congestion and carbon emissions, while helping to promote a healthy lifestyle through regular exercise.
BEN ensures that beneficiaries can maintain their bikes, and know how to ride safely. The network also engages with decision-makers to ensure that Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) is properly integrated into transport planning.
