The Houses of Parliament is a crucial site for Cape Town's cultural and political heritage as it was a key site for apartheid decisions and the parliament of South Africa is based here.
The Houses of Parliament was built in 1884 and had several additions attached to it until 1980. Although Cape Town is not the official seat of government, the South African parliament is based here. Visitors can enjoy a 1-hour, free tour Monday-Fridays. Tours need to be booked a week ahead and visitors are adviced that they will need to bring an ID card to enter the building.
