More than 95 schools across Cape Town have already been reached by the City’s water awareness programme in 2026, with learners at Kommetjie Primary School recently joining the growing number of young Capetonians learning about water conservation, climate resilience and the future of the City’s water supply.
During the visit, learners participated in a lively programme led by Manzi, the City’s beloved water mascot. Through song, dance, interactive games and quizzes, they learned about responsible water use and the role they can play in protecting Cape Town’s precious water resources. Learners also tested their knowledge through educational activities focused on saving water at home, at school and in their communities
City’s New Water Programme
The school awareness programme forms part of the City’s ongoing efforts to educate communities about water security and the importance of adapting to the impacts of climate change. The programme also provides an opportunity to explain how the City is diversifying its water supply through the New Water Programme to reduce reliance on rainfall-dependent sources. Learners were introduced to key aspects of the City’s New Water Programme, including water reuse, desalination and other innovative projects aimed at building a more resilient and diversified water supply for the future.
‘One of our priorities is to help young people understand the value of water and the role they can play in protecting this precious resource. The City’s New Water Programme will help strengthen Cape Town’s resilience to climate change by diversifying our water supply, but long-term water security also depends on informed and responsible water use.
‘This school roadshow is more than an awareness campaign; it is an investment in future generations. By helping learners understand where their water comes from and how it can be reused and conserved, we are building a culture of water stewardship that will benefit Cape Town for years to come,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Zahid Badroodien.
