Rethink Plastic Bag Usage

Warning: plastic is environmentally harmful.  Avoid using.

Similar to this article’s lead, the reasons for banning plastic are simple, straightforward, and logically sensible.
Shoppers use plastic bags for an average of 20 minutes.  Over 95% of these plastic bags are then discarded and transported to a landfill where decomposition takes 1,000 years.

The rising popularity of food markets, especially those that claim to be “organic,” has prompted an avalanche of new vendors eager to capitalize on the trend.

With such a vast selection of Cape Town food markets, choosing one that fits your personality and expectations can be a daunting and overwhelming task.  Fear not, I devoted an entire week to visiting city markets and compiled a list of my favourites.

Earthworms process 40 tons of Household Organic Waste

Within only eight months, 40 tons of household organic waste has been diverted from landfill sites through the second phase of Cape Town’s home composting study.

Of the 1,6 million tons of waste directed to the City’s landfills each year, approximately 6% consists of garden and organic waste from households (95 000 tons per annum); while approximately 5% is made up of organic kitchen waste (80 000 tons per annum).

Summer is not over just yet - a chance to enjoy Cape Town's special beaches.

Loops made his first appearance at the summer concert series last March as an internationally rising star.

The impressive Bay Harbour Market concludes my week's market tour.
Where to start?  From community uplift projects to an aggressive quest to become the country’s first zero waste market, Bay Harbour fits the clichéd mould of saving the best for last.
Boasting 6,500 visitors every weekend, waste quickly accumulates.

Saturday’s market choice is obvious, but necessary.  And one honouable mention.

There are reasons the Neighborhood Goods Market is the most popular Cape Town food market.

Head to Muizenberg for Friday’s market selection.

Located in an old plane hangar, it’s hard to pinpoint what makes the Blue Bird Garage Market special.
