October is National Transport month. Find out what some of our Flagships have been doing to offer alternative mobility.

As outlined in the Green Economy Strategy Framework, transportation is the key economic sector in the province that enables all other sectors. It is also a significant job creator, making up 10% of the Western Cape’s GDP. Globally, the transport sector is undergoing considerable change to reduce carbon emissions and improve economic efficiency.

Doing Their Bit to get the Green Economy Working for the Poor

110% Green Flagships share the impact being made in improving the living conditions of citizens of the Western Cape.

110% Green: Genius of Place Phase 3

The Genius of Place project is based on biomimicry principles of using the genius of nature to solve societal problems.

It is recognised that nature often knows best and tends to find innovative solutions to challenges. One of the major challenges faced by the Western Cape is water scarcity.

An interesting two days was spent in Theewaterskloof learning about food waste reduction at the small and large scale.

The Food Forward Project delivered its first food waste tour in the Theewaterskloof Municipality at the end of August 2014.

WWF Small-Scale Fisheries Learning Journey

A delegate from the 110% Green Food Forward project attended the WWF small-scale fisheries learning journey up South Africa’s West coast.

The main aim of the voyage was to bring a number of the large retailers together with the fishers to engage around possible opportunities and constraints for collaboration between the two groups in the seafood sector.

110% Green Annual Event: 67 Minute Cook-Off for Mandela Day

110% Green’s Annual Event with a purpose saw a cook-off that launched their Food Forward project.

This year, 110% Green celebrated our annual event by giving back. We were hosted by our partner Spier on the 18 July 2014 for this fun and eventful day. With only 10 minutes to prepare, our eight teams of six embarked upon a 67 minute competition to cook the tastiest soups for donation.

The ‘Food Forward’ project is a strategic project under the 110% Green Initiative, and is aligned with the Western Cape Government’s Green Economy Strategy Framework.

Probiotic Technology Used To Assist Waste Management

Probio collaborated with the University of Stellenbosch and the Stellenbosch Municipality in an investigation of the treatment of organic food waste in Enkanini.

Most of the 4500 Enkanini residents don’t have access to electricity, and about 80 flushing toilets are shared amongst them all. Roughly seven concrete skips of waste are generated by the community each week, but for various reasons they are not collected.
