Stargazing at Edith Stephens Wetland Park

Edith Stephens Wetland Park will host a stargazing evening on Saturday 4th April along with the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) and Primary Science Programme.

It is part of a worldwide initiative to encourage people to look at the night sky continuously for 100 hours, and has been organised in celebration of 2009's status as the International Year of Astronomy.

One of SAAO’s goals is to encourage as many people as possible to look through a telescope as Galileo did for the first time 400 years ago.

It is the first time an event like this will be held at the Park and is a great opportunity for the public to learn about amateur astronomy.

The evening will start at 19:00 with a slide show. Local astronomers from the SAAO will conduct talks.

Entrance is free. Please bring along a picnic basket, blanket and torch. The event will end at around 22:00. No alcohol will be allowed on the premises.

The Edith Stephens Wetland Park is in Lansdowne Road, Philippi.
